George Barringer entered the 1946 Indy 500 as an owner/driver, having acquired the Gulf-Miller car during the winter of 1945.
His sponsor for the race was Preston Tucker, the entrepreneur. Very few people realize it, but Tucker was alreeady planning his entry into the automobile field with what would be known as a radically new-design automobile, called the "Tucker Torpedo."
